What Wonders Picayune Holds

Overbooked.

It always seems to go like this when I come down for visits. Both parents want equal time with me. I want equal time with parents PLUS some time with friends tossed in there. But which friends get time?

Tomorrow is a fine example. My grandfather, God bless 'em, wanted to see me while I was down. He got wind that I was joining the Air Force and he wants to, like, shake my hand or something like that. Wait until he figures out I am joining for all the wrong reasons. Oh, well. Serving my country will be a fringe benefit, I suppose.

Anyway, he wants to see me, and his plan for me was to drive over to Panama City for a night or two. But I had to put the ix-nay on that plan and give a compromise: Meet in Mobile, Alabama, for lunch.

But I changed plans a little and decided to drive a little further and eat at Lambert's Cafe near Gulf Shores, Alabama. It's the home of the throwed rolls, ya know.

So, just going there and back will be a 6-hour trip. Add on eating lunch and the obligatory walking around shops. Then, I want to see my friend Lisa again tomorrow night, plus I want to spend time with my Good Friend Kourtney tomorrow night as well.

Coming home for a visit really wears me out. I wish it wasn't so goshdanged stressful.

Yeah. Pardon my French.

Let's see... What else have I done since I last updated? It has been a while, I know. But I usually end up staggering back to bed after a long-ass day of doing things that I have no energy left to update.

I went with my Dad's side of family (lots of steps and steps-in-law) canoing. If you remember last time I went while I was down, I tipped the canoe while Daisy was in it. She about drowned, but did better than me.

This time, I didn't even bring Daisy because I gave her a flea treatment earlier and didn't want to waste the money. I didn't tip in the canoe on this ride, but I did jump out a few times.

I also went through a pretty fast rapid with nothing but a life vest protecting me from the horrid rocks. I was told that there were no rocks on the route I would take, but my knee is still bruised as a statement of the contrary.

Then Saturday I went to see my Dad's new farm he is buying. I am thinking of using my enlistment bonus from the Air Force to buy a 4-acre plot of land from him. That would be a good investment, I suppose. Any of you fine ladies interested in a guy who can cook and clean, has no ex-wives or childred that I know of, and owns real estate?

No? Oh, well.

Saturday night, my friend Lisa, who is just a polymer scientist -- nothing interesting -- and I went down to the Gulf Coast for some fine dining and gaming. We went to a restaurant called "Catch of the Day."

It was a seafood restaurant.

I got a $17 platter of assembled fried things from the sea. I also got a half-dozen raw oysters. Call 'em gross if you want, but damn almighty, those things are tasty. Make ya horny, too.

So, the meal total was $40. We then went to the Beau Rivage Casino where Lisa and I played the nickle slots. I put in $1 in the slot machine, and 20 minutes later, I cashed out over $35. Not a bad return. Then we went and played poker, where I won even more money. I think I played more things, and eventually walked away $55 richer.

Not a bad investment off of $1.

Sunday... Didn't do much. Sat around. That's about it.

Monday's adventure was a trip my mom and I took to New Orleans. I took lots of pics, so expect to see some soon. We went shopping, and I bought some gifts for friends back home. We went walking through the French Quarter where we also had lunch. I got a fried crawfish Caesar salad, which is so good, it'll make ya wanna slap yo grandma.

We took the trolly to Harra's casino down by the river, and I went straight to the craps table where I won a total of $35. Not the luck I had a few nights previous, but I still came out in the black. I bought a few more things then came home kinda late.

And today was the Pampered Chef party my mom hosted in my honor. Basically, I cooked all day again. What I cooked, though, had nothing to do with her party. My mom has a sick friend, and she wanted me to make some of my famous chicken noodle soup.

My chicken noodle soup takes all damned day to cook, so that's what I did.

Pampered Chef parties should be changed to have the name, "A Million Uses for Canned Crescent Rolls." Every time I go to a Pampered Chef party, they fix something different with those damned Pillsbury crescent rolls.

I just don't understand why you would spend all of that money on semi-decent (ok... a lot of it is crap, but they do have one or two nice things) kitchen supplies only to cook pre-fabricated food. That blows my mind.

Cook from scratch, dammit! It's just as quick, much tastier, and means more. Sometimes I think chefs are held in such high esteem just because they are now the only people who don't use Pillsbury this-or-that in all of their dishes.

Tonight's crescent roll concoction was a taco meat-stuffed crescent roll with the rest of the taco fixins on top. Yech.

But it is fun being around a bunch of older women who think you are adorable. They eat you up. I love getting attention, if you haven't guessed.

And tomorrow is going to Lambert's. And Thursday is going to be spent with my dad doing who-knows-what. And Friday I go back home.

I tell ya. I'm overbooked. I wish I had another week!

But then again, no I don't. Getting tired of the people down here. Slow as Christmas, the whole lot of 'em. You can't get in and out of Wal-Mart here because of everyone walking as slow as the day is long.

You know that phrase, "A New York Minute"? They should coin the phrase, "A Mississippi Minute." Maybe they do. I dunno.

Well, I am too tired to really think of anything funny or overly interesting to write about. This has been on of my driest entries ever. And I am not even going to edit it.

So, I hope you liked it -- errors and all.
